About Squirrel Wood Scout Campsite
Set in the village of Burghwallis, on the outskirts of Doncaster, South Yorkshire, Squirrel Wood Scout Campsite is a place for young people to explore, learn and enjoy the outdoors together.
We combine the character of traditional woodland camping with activities and accommodation for Scouts, Guides and other uniformed groups. From pitching tents and cooking over an open fire to trying something new, a visit gives young people the chance to build confidence, develop practical skills and make lasting memories.
As the campsite develops, we’re keeping the spirit of traditional camping at its heart, giving groups space to shape their own adventures.

Our origins
Squirrel Wood’s Scouting story began with a generous gift. Following the sale of the Burghwallis Hall estate in 1941, the woodland was purchased by Doncaster’s District Scout Commissioner, Major Clark.
In April 1944, he formally presented the 60 acres of woodland to the Doncaster Association of Boy Scouts as a campsite. Scouts from Doncaster, Mexborough and Maltby attended the ceremony, where the deeds were handed to a representative of the Boy Scouts’ Trust Corporation.
The gift gave local Scouts a permanent place to camp, develop outdoor skills and enjoy adventures together. Today, we continue that legacy, keeping traditional camping at the heart of Squirrel Wood, South Yorkshire.
Our volunteers
Squirrel Wood Scout Campsite is run entirely by volunteers who give their time, skills and enthusiasm to make outdoor adventures possible for young people.
From welcoming visiting groups and supporting activities to maintaining our facilities and caring for the woodland, every contribution helps keep the campsite ready for its next adventure.
